Humans are amazing. If we want to do something bad enough and believe we can, we will find a way. Take for example, the space race, (a little before my time I know, but I feel is one of our greatest achievements to date. Too bad it was for all the wrong reasons.) Back in the late 50’s The Cold War was escalating, Russia just launched Sputnik 1 into space, which set off a major chain reaction. With the launch of Sputnik 1 it meant that the Russians now had a rocket capable of not only reaching space but also the United States.
The fear of Soviet Russia really started to take hold. The United States could not let Russia become the superpower it wanted to be. The US had to win the space race. It had to be the first to the moon. Thus NASA and the space program was born.
On May 25th, 1961 President John F. Kennedy addresses Congress and challenged the nation to go to the Moon before the end of the decade. On July 20th, 1969 Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin become the first men to walk on the Moon while crewmate Michael Collins orbited around the Moon alone.
It took the United States 8 years to put a man on the moon. What an amazing feat even if it was done for political power. Still it would not have been achievable if it wasn’t for everyone involved wanting to do it. It wasn’t by chance that those people did what they did to achieve something so extraordinary as putting a man on the moon. They became engineers, rocket and computer scientists, astrophysicists, Astronauts, etc, etc so they could put a man on the moon.
To become the person you want to be, you must want to change and become that person. You must take ownership of that desire and commit to who you want to be by changing your thought process to think like who you want to be. Then you must do, learn and know the things that make you who you want to be. Don’t just act like you do. Then you will become who you want to be.
Take for example: I want to become a lawyer. I’m not going to go out and buy a briefcase, get some business cards that say I’m a lawyer, then barge into court and try to do lawyer stuff. No, I’m going to go through training to become a lawyer.
- First, I need to commit myself and my life to becoming a lawyer.
- Next, I need to start thinking as a lawyer.
- To do so, I need to learn the skills to think like and become a lawyer. Such as going to school, passing the Bar Exam, and learning from mentors and other teachers.
- I also need to dress like and play the part of a lawyer by practicing law.
Once I have done all of that, I will become a lawyer.
Most people fail to achieve their dreams and goals because they don’t commit themselves completely to them. I want to get into shape but I don’t workout or I workout a little but still eat poorly. Therefore I will never be in shape. I wanted it and was doing some of it but I wasn’t thinking how a healthy in shape person would think. If I did I would think about the whole picture, not just working out but what I was eating and what else I was doing in the rest of my life.
You don’t have to go all crazy with changing your life. In fact if you do, the chances are you will fail because it will be too overwhelming. Take small steps. You win a race one step at a time.
So for this week (and the rest of your life). Think about your goals. What ones did you really want and failed at? What parts of the Want it, Think it, Do it, Become it did you miss. Now knowing that, would you be able to start working at that dream or goal again?
If you are having trouble, send me an email. I would be glad to talk about your goals and see if I can help you achieve them in any way.
Remember, Want it, Think it, Do it, Become it. Everyone has the will power and resources to achieve their dreams and goals. It’s just a matter of how. Good Luck!
